Mortie 34tie

My 34th birthday at the best Irish pub around, Molly Maguires in Seattle, WA.

Singing about the other John

Last night I went to the happiest place on Earth — San Francisco’s favorite karaoke bar, The Mint. With Johnny Cash’s recent death, many singers selected songs from his extensive catalogue, but no one offered a tribute to the other death that day, of John Ritter. So I sang the theme from “Three’s Company”, although the instance I’ll always remember John Ritter for is the glow-in-the-dark condom scene from Skin Deep.

“America is … like a dumb puppy that has big teeth that can bite and hurt you, aggressive. “
Johnny Depp, on the United States war with Iraq, later disavowing the quote from having anti-American sentiment

Bonzai Karaoke

My thesis presentation is ready. A great cloud has lifted. Only a couple of minor website designs and a scientific reasoning paper remain. Hooah!I celebrated with Kimmay and his ex-girlfriend Jennifer, and tonight at Molly Maguire’s, we played “Bonzai Karaoke”. That means that Jennifer made all of the requests, and Kimmay and I had no idea what she would request for us. They just had to be songs that weren’t obscure, and songs we had never sung before, so as a result, I got to sing “We Didn’t Start the Fire” by Billy Joel, “Baby, Don’t Get Hooked on Me” by Mac Davis, and “Father Figure” by George Michael. Kimmay and I did an “All in the Family” duet – I got to be Edith this time.

New Year’s Eve

If ever this was the way to start a new year, the Wild Kingdom Rhumba V was the way to do it, in Portland, Oregon. On the way from Seattle, I stopped at a coffeehouse in Olympia and had my farewell coffee, one of my resolutions for the year. I met my friend Jillian in the distant Portland suburb of Tigard, where her and her brother live.New Year’s Eve was spent at the Tiffany Center, a five story building with two two-story grand ballrooms. Everyone was dressed well, including me and Jillian – it felt like going to a ball, something I’ve never done – and the lower ballroom was set up for a live band and – karaoke! We signed up: I sang a classic Diamond tune: “Brother Love’s Traveling Salvation Show”, Jillian sang “Blister in the Sun”. Everyone was dancing, and when we later went up to the upper ballroom to see Pink Martini, we had the chance to rhumba, salsa and meringue to Latin beats. Tonight I start with a clean slate.

Black Betty

I’m at the microphone tonight at Molly Maguire’s (which I still call the Barge Inn since I started going there when it was under different ownership). It’s good to be back. I get five songs in, including two Neil Diamond, one David Allen Coe, and Ramjam’s “Black Betty”.
